Similar to and compatible with the ISO 9001:2008 Standard, ISO 14001:2004 is developed around the W. Edward Deming’s model of Plan-Do-Check-Act. It combines regulatory compliance with sustainable development initiatives for environmental stewardship. It requires commitment by the organization to comply with regulatory and legal requirements, pollution prevention and stresses continual improvement.

The organization must identify products, services and activities that may have an impact on the environment.
